We had to disassemble the doors and drawer facings and remove all hardware. Then we had to thoroughly clean the cabinets with a degreaser to remove any grease and/or grime from the surfaces to be painted. The cabinet frames, doors and drawer faces were then sanded. Any bare wood spots were primed using Zinsser BIN Shellac primer and then lightly sanded again prior to painting. We then applied 2 coats of Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane in a semi-gloss finish to the doors, drawer faces and cabinet frames. After everything dried properly we then applied the glaze to give the cabinets an antique look. These cabinets are 20 years old and the homeowner felt it was time to refinish them.
The challenge with this project was the amount of prep work involved to protect the homeowner's granite countertops and wood floors from scratches and paint drips. The countertops and floors were properly covered during the project to avoid any damage or mess.
The detail and proper painting technique such as spraying the finish properly are highly important when refinishing cabinets in order to achieve a professional finish. The glazing process is key to achieving the desired look.
Lastly, we performed a thorough clean up and final walk through with the customer for their approval prior to payment.
